Forklift Operator Training in San Antonio

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio builds the Tundra and Sequoia, and Toyota says both are built exclusively in Texas. An assembly plant with on-site suppliers runs on steady parts delivery: pallet jacks and tuggers feeding the line, sit-down trucks in receiving, and a lot of pedestrian traffic crossing forklift routes. Operators in that setting need training that fits tight schedules and shared aisles, not just open-warehouse driving.

Port San Antonio, on the former Kelly Air Force Base southwest of downtown, is a 1,900-acre campus with more than 80 tenant customers. Its Kelly Field industrial airport and East Kelly Railport bring aircraft maintenance, heavy-lift cargo and rail freight into the same area as manufacturing and warehouse space. That mix means operators may handle long or awkward loads outdoors, unload railcars, and work near aircraft hangars on the same shift.

BHG Forklift Training is a service of BHG Safety Partners LLC, a Disabled Veteran-Owned company based in Hannibal, Missouri. We come to your San Antonio-area facility and train on your own trucks, covering all seven OSHA truck classes. Training follows 29 CFR 1910.178(l): formal instruction, practical hands-on training, and an evaluation of each operator in your workplace. Your company then certifies the operators who complete it.

Where Forklifts Work in San Antonio

  • Toyota Texas truck plant and on-site suppliers

Toyota said the Sequoia launch involved more than 3,800 Toyota employees along with on-site suppliers at the plant, which builds the Tundra and Sequoia. Line-side delivery with Class 3 pallet jacks and Class 6 tuggers means constant crossings with pedestrians and other trucks, so right-of-way rules and speed control need to be part of evaluations.

  • Kelly Field aerospace and air logistics

Port San Antonio reports a cluster of aerospace customers with over 7,000 workers in commercial and military MRO at Kelly Field, which has an 11,500-foot runway able to handle project and heavy-lift cargo. Moving engines, airframe parts and crated components means off-center and long loads, tight hangar clearances and work near parked aircraft.

  • East Kelly Railport

Port San Antonio offers warehouse and manufacturing build-to-suit sites at East Kelly Railport with direct access to Union Pacific and BNSF trains. Railcar loading adds bridge plates, blocked railcars and moving rail equipment to the usual dock hazards.

  • Aerospace and advanced manufacturing tenants

Port San Antonio reported that German manufacturer Blackwave committed $2.5 million to upgrade a 35,000-square-foot building for its first U.S. factory, which will make high-pressure tanks for rockets. Plants handling high-value, fragile components need operators who can lift and set loads precisely, often with attachments that change a truck's rated capacity.

What Shapes Forklift Safety in San Antonio

  • Texas is not an OSHA-approved State Plan, so private employers in San Antonio are under federal OSHA and its powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178.

  • National Weather Service normals for San Antonio show an average of 122.4 days a year with highs of 90 F or more, and a normal August high of 96 F. Outdoor yard, rail and dock work needs heat breaks and water, and heat should be covered as a hazard in training.

  • The metro crosses OSHA area office lines: Bexar and Medina counties go to the San Antonio Area Office, while Comal, Guadalupe and Kendall counties go to Austin.

Texas has no OSHA State Plan for private employers, so federal OSHA applies. Bexar County is assigned to the OSHA San Antonio Area Office at 8200 W. Interstate 10. If you also have a site in New Braunfels, Seguin or Boerne, note that Comal, Guadalupe and Kendall counties are assigned to the Austin Area Office.
Yes. Tow tractors are powered industrial trucks under OSHA's standard, listed as Class 6, so drivers need formal instruction, practical training and a workplace evaluation like any forklift operator. BHG covers hitching, towing multiple carts, stopping distances and pedestrian crossings along your actual delivery route.
Yes. BHG trains at your facility on the forklifts and attachments your operators use. That matters for aerospace and manufacturing work, where clamps, extensions or rotators change a truck's rated capacity and handling. The evaluation takes place in your own workplace, and your company certifies each operator who completes the training.
OSHA requires each operator's performance to be evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner after an accident or near miss, when an operator is seen driving unsafely, when they are assigned a different type of truck, or when workplace conditions change, such as a new building layout or a move to a rail-served site.
