Forklift Operator Training in Athens

The Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Department's list of private employers puts Pilgrim's at 1,350 jobs and the Caterpillar Athens Plant at 1,100, ahead of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, Power Partners, Carrier Transicold and ABB. Georgia's Innovation Corridor Joint Development Authority sums up the county's industrial history as food processing, pharmaceuticals, plastics and now Caterpillar bulldozers, with CSX and Norfolk Southern lines running into the Athena Industrial Park. Every one of those plants receives, stores and ships material by forklift.

Georgia does not run an OSHA State Plan for private employers, so Athens plants fall under federal OSHA and the powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, applies as written. OSHA assigns Clarke County, along with neighboring Oconee, Jackson, Madison, Oglethorpe and Barrow counties, to its Atlanta East Area Office. There is no separate Georgia forklift rule to reconcile.

BHG Forklift Training belongs to BHG Safety Partners LLC, a Disabled Veteran-Owned company in Hannibal, Missouri, and does its work at the client's site. For an Athens plant that means classroom sessions, hands-on practice and an evaluation of each operator on your own trucks and floor, with training available in English or Spanish. Your company certifies the operators once they are evaluated.

Where Forklifts Work in Athens

  • Caterpillar Athens Plant

When Caterpillar chose a site near Athens in 2012, it said the plant would build small track-type tractors and mini hydraulic excavators. Heavy frames, components and finished machines move through a plant like this, so capacity plates, load center, attachments and travel near assembly stations are the main training points.

  • Food processing

Pilgrim's, the chicken producer, lists Athens, GA among its North American facilities, and its 1,350 jobs put it first among non-health-care companies on the county's private employer list. Food plants combine electric forklifts and pallet jacks with wet, washed-down floors and refrigerated rooms, so traction, cold exposure and travel between coolers and warm docks need to be part of hands-on training.

  • Equipment, electrical and refrigeration manufacturing

Carrier Transicold and Power Partners each have 500 jobs on the county's list, with ABB at 375, and all three appear among the department's top advanced manufacturing employers. Large components, crated units and steel stock often call for counterbalance trucks with attachments or tow tractors, which change how a truck handles and what it can safely lift.

  • Rail-served industrial parks

According to Georgia's Innovation Corridor Joint Development Authority, CSX and Norfolk Southern provide freight service into Athens, with lines running directly to the Athena Industrial Park. Loading boxcars and trailers puts operators on bridge plates and dock edges, where wheel chocks, trailer restraints and plate capacity have to be checked every time.

What Shapes Forklift Safety in Athens

  • Georgia private employers are under federal OSHA, not a State Plan, so an Athens plant follows 29 CFR 1910.178 directly and answers to the Atlanta East Area Office. That also means the same rule applies whether a site is in Clarke County or across the line in Oconee or Jackson County.

  • Athens summers are long and hot. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Athens Ben Epps Airport average 62.2 days a year at 90 degrees or higher, so operators loading trailers, working outdoor yards or running propane trucks inside warm buildings need water, rest breaks and ventilation planned into the shift.

  • Winter is milder but not free of freezing: the same NOAA normals show 46.4 days a year with a low of 32 degrees or less. Frost on dock plates and outdoor ramps on those mornings is a traction hazard for forklifts moving between buildings.

Federal OSHA's Atlanta East Area Office, at 2296 Henderson Mill Road NE in Atlanta. OSHA's Georgia county list assigns Clarke County to that office, along with Oconee, Madison, Jackson, Oglethorpe and Barrow. Georgia has no State Plan for private employers, so the federal powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, applies directly to Athens-area facilities.
Reading the capacity plate, keeping loads within the rated load center, and understanding how any attachment reduces capacity. Heavy or off-center parts can tip a counterbalance truck well before the rated weight, so operators should practice with the actual parts and fixtures they move. BHG trains and evaluates each operator in your plant, on your own trucks.
Yes. BHG Forklift Training offers its sessions in English and Spanish. The requirements are the same either way: formal instruction, hands-on practice on the trucks each person will run, and an evaluation of their performance in your workplace. Tell us which shifts and crews need which language when we plan the visit to your Athens-area facility.
Heat and ventilation. With NOAA normals at Athens Ben Epps Airport averaging more than 60 days a year at 90 degrees or higher, doors may be closed for air conditioning or opened for airflow, and both affect exhaust buildup from propane trucks. Training should cover cylinder changes, recognizing carbon monoxide symptoms, and your building's rules for where internal combustion trucks can run.
