Forklift Operator Training in Albany

The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission says food and beverage processing has anchored Albany since the early 1900s, and its list of manufacturers today includes Procter & Gamble, Molson Coors, Mars Wrigley, Tara Foods, Sunnyland Farms, Georgia-Pacific's corrugated and lumber operations, Pratt Industries and Thrush Aircraft. It also counts Webstaurant for foodservice distribution and Outdoor Network for manufacturing and distribution. ADEDC also lists farm equipment makers such as AMADAS Industries and Unverferth, so the local truck fleet ranges from warehouse pallet jacks to yard forklifts.

That output varies widely in shape and weight: rolls and finished cases of tissue, pallets of beverages, confectionery, jarred sauces, lumber and corrugated board. Each plant pairs different trucks with different hazards, from clamp attachments on paper rolls to lumber on an outdoor yard to fast-moving pallet jacks in distribution. OSHA requires each operator to be trained on the truck they drive and evaluated in the conditions of their own workplace.

BHG Forklift Training, a service of BHG Safety Partners LLC of Hannibal, Missouri, travels to your Albany-area site. We cover the classroom instruction, the hands-on practice and the workplace evaluation on your own trucks, in English or Spanish, and your company then certifies its operators. Because the practice and evaluation take place in your building, operators are judged on your own docks, aisles, attachments and loads.

Where Forklifts Work in Albany

  • Procter & Gamble paper products plant

P&G says its Albany plant, one of its paper products sites, manufactures Bounty paper towels and Charmin toilet paper. Large, light but bulky rolls and tall stacks of finished cases are usually handled with clamp attachments, which change a truck's capacity and visibility, so operators need training on the attachment as well as the truck.

  • Beverage, confectionery and food plants

ADEDC lists Molson Coors (beverages), Mars Wrigley (candies), Tara Foods (sauces and condiments) and Sunnyland Farms (pecans and gourmet treats) among Albany's manufacturers. These plants run electric forklifts and pallet jacks on floors that may be wet or sticky, and busy shipping docks where trailer creep and stacked pallet stability need attention.

  • Lumber, corrugated and paper packaging

Georgia-Pacific Lumber, Georgia-Pacific Corrugated and Pratt Industries all appear on ADEDC's list of Albany manufacturers. Lumber yards rely on pneumatic-tire forklifts on outdoor surfaces with long, shifting loads, while corrugated plants move bales and stacked board that can topple if handled poorly.

  • Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany

ADEDC describes MCLB Albany as home to the Marine Corps Production Plant Albany, where ground combat weapon systems are remanufactured, with a workforce of more than 4,000 civilian-Marines, active-duty military and contractors. ADEDC also cites smart warehousing, storage and sustainment at the base, and contractors supporting that work may run forklifts alongside base vehicles and personnel.

What Shapes Forklift Safety in Albany

  • Georgia is not an OSHA-approved State Plan, so federal OSHA and 29 CFR 1910.178 cover forklifts at private employers in Albany. OSHA's Georgia county list sends Dougherty County to the Savannah Area Office, while Muscogee County (Columbus) is assigned to Atlanta West.

  • NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Southwest Georgia Regional Airport show 106.3 days a year at 90 degrees or higher, more than a quarter of the year. Operators on lumber yards, loading docks and in trailers need water, rest and acclimatization planned into shifts from late spring through early fall, and hot, closed warehouses using propane trucks need attention to ventilation.

  • MCLB Albany splits the picture. Safety programs for civilian federal employees there come from Section 19 of the OSH Act, Executive Order 12196 and 29 CFR 1960, while private contractors working on the base remain private employers under OSHA and its forklift standard, and may face added requirements through their contracts.

Federal OSHA's Savannah Area Office, at 450 Mall Boulevard, Suite J, Savannah. OSHA's county list assigns Dougherty County and its neighbors, including Lee, Terrell and Worth counties, to Savannah. Georgia has no State Plan for private employers, so the federal forklift standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, applies directly to Albany plants and warehouses.
OSHA lists attachments among the required training topics, because an attachment changes the truck's rated capacity, its handling and the operator's view. Operators should be able to read the capacity plate for the truck as equipped and should be evaluated clamping and stacking the rolls and cases they actually handle. We build that into hands-on training and evaluation at your plant.
As a private employer you are generally covered by OSHA, and 29 CFR 1910.178 includes the operator training rule. Federal agencies run their own safety programs under 29 CFR 1960 for civilian federal employees, and the base may set additional requirements through your contract. Check your contract terms, and we can train and evaluate your operators on the trucks you use.
OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator's performance at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner if an operator is seen driving unsafely, has an accident or near miss, gets a poor evaluation, is assigned a different type of truck, or if workplace conditions change. We can run those evaluations at your site on your own trucks.
